SpotLight A spotlight may be subtle or bold. In the example to the right, it's definitely bold! Not only is the spotlight intense, but the ambient (surrounding) light has been reduced. This sharp contrast quickly brings your eye to the subject in the blue shirt. Too dramatic? Perhaps, but you can use this technique to highlight the subject in a crowd, particularly when cropping the photo is undesirable. For a more subtle use of the spotlight, see the Provincetown photo below. The ambient light is unchanged and the intensity of the spot is rather weak. The photo still has a natural look. Notice the placement of the spotlight in relation to the 6 in the sign. The spot works with the photo, not against it. While the spotlight can be applied in any color, neutral white is used here.
